Vietnam is known as the “nation of motorbikes” and the unique traffic scene here was a surprise for me, someone coming from Japan. In this article, I will analyze the traffic situation in Ho Chi Minh City based on my various impressions.
1.Reasons for the Popularity of Motorbikes and Their Convenience
Motorbikes are popular due to their affordability, ease of maneuvering through traffic jams or narrow alleys, and the underdeveloped public transportation system. In particular, in Ho Chi Minh City, frequent traffic jams have gradually made motorbikes the primary mode of transportation.
2.The Increase in Cars and Its Impact
Economic growth, infrastructure development, and the rising standard of living have led to an increase in car ownership. However, this has also exacerbated traffic congestion and air pollution.
3.Survey of Local Residents’ Opinions
I conducted a survey with local residents in Ho Chi Minh City and obtained the following results:
・Traffic characteristics: Frequent traffic jams, with motorbikes being the most common vehicles on the road.
・Daily transportation means: The majority of people primarily use motorbikes.
・Priority factors when choosing transportation: Most people prioritize saving time when commuting.
・Positive points: Improvements in infrastructure and the public’s adherence to traffic laws.
・Improvement: Reducing traffic congestion, expanding roads, and raising awareness of traffic participation.
4.Personal Experience and Observations with Motorbikes
I tried commuting by motorbike and found that even during rush hour, motorbikes move faster than cars due to their ability to weave through traffic. Motorbike fares vary depending on the time of day, and in the morning, there are a lot of motorbikes on the road.
Conclusion
While motorbikes remain the main mode of transportation in Ho Chi Minh City, the number of cars is increasing along with infrastructure development. In the future, efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic awareness are anticipated.
